Star Wars: The Last Jedi Is 2017's Highest

Episode 8 also passed $1 billion worldwide.

With $533.1 million in ticket sales in just three weeks of release -- including an additional first place finish of $52.7 million over New Year's weekend -- Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now the No. 1 movie of 2017 at the domestic box office.

The Last Jedi dethroned another Disney release, Beauty and the Beast, which drops to second place with $504 million. As of January 1, 2018, however, Beauty and the Beast remains the No. 1 movie of 2017 worldwide with nearly $1.3 billion. (Here is a list of the top domestic box office releases of 2017.)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi also passed the $1 billion milestone at the worldwide box office this weekend. Star Wars: The Force Awakens finished its run in 2015 with $2.07 billion worldwide, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story passed the $1 billion mark last year.

The Last Jedi has also surpassed Rogue One's final domestic tally of $532.2 million, but it won't end its run anywhere near The Force Awakens' $936.7 million total, which remains the highest-grossing domestic release in history. That still makes The Last Jedi the second highest-grossing Star Wars movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation).
