A special section on great getaway cars is one of the major attractions of the fourth London Classic Car Show, as well as the usual selection of mouthwatering classics from all eras, as well as clubs and restoration experts.
The show, held at the ExCeL exhibition halls in the capital’s former docklands from February 15-18, will also focus on limited editions, one-offs and prototypes - a “delectable collection of unique street and competition cars renowned for their rarity, curiosity and desirability”.
Actor and confirmed petrolhead Philip Glenister will curate the special “Getaway Cars” display. Famous for “firing up” his Audi quattro coupé as throwback DCI Gene Hunt in the Ashes to Ashes TV series, Glenister aims to feature a showcase of cars as chosen by notorious crooks to evade the law whether on celluloid or in real life.
Vehicles already on the shortlist include a number of criminal classics such as the Mk1 Ford Transit van, Jaguar Mk2 and the Mini Cooper S as famously employed by Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) and his gang to escape from the Carabinieri di Torino in the original version of The Italian Job film.
Glenister said: “We will take our inspiration from TV, films and real life. These cars need to be quick, handle well and, of course, have lots of room in the back. I’m sure we’ll have an iconic red quattro exhibited somewhere at the show, but this display will be about cars from the other side of the law.
“It’s pleasure to curate at such a special car show and where better to celebrate getaway cars than in East London at ExCel.”
For 2018 there will be more than 800 historic cars on display. The popular Car Club Square has been allocated more space for 2018 to showcase more than 30 of the UK’s leading one-make clubs, which will be staging displays of their favourite vehicles. Club members will be on hand to discuss their cherished cars. And it’s not all exotics either, so expect a range of popular and affordable classics alongside the multi-million pound Ferraris.
We all love to see (and hear) cars in action, so the Grand Avenue running through the centre of the hall will provide parades of some of the world’s greatest classic road and competition cars.
Also look out for Speakers’ Corner, an open forum where high-profile and expert guests are interviewed about a wide range of classic car-related subjects.
The London Classic Car Show will once again be complemented by its sister show Historic Motorsport International, which was introduced to celebrate the UK’s leading role in all areas of classic racing and rallying. Admission is free to London Classic Car Show ticket-holders.
Both shows will feature a wealth of specialists covering all the major marques - and, no doubt, scores of obscure ones, too.
The breadth and depth of the classic car scene is reflected in the show space more than doubling for the fourth staging of this event, compared with the inaugural show in 2015. The organisers also confidently predict an increase in the 37,000 visitors recorded earlier this year.
Event director Bas Bungish said: “We need to keep expanding, too, as back in February we had record crowds and record numbers of exhibitors selling cars for record prices.
“London sits right at the heart of the global classic car movement, and the show is enhancing the city’s reputation as the world’s classic car capital.”
Tickets are on sale already, with discounts for advance bookings. Prices start at £25 for single adult entry on Friday, Saturday or Sunday when purchased in advance (£30 on the door), with a child (aged 6-16) ticket costing £20. Late afternoon admission is an even more affordable option - just the thing for a classic car fix after work.
A range of upgraded Premium and Family Tickets start at £55. Premium ticket-holders will also be able to enjoy the best-ever views of the unique Grand Avenue from the new Bridge Viewing Area.
