The interactive series #WarGames, helmed by Her Story creator Sam Barlow, has gotten a release date of early 2018.
Variety reports the episodic series, announced a few years ago, is based on the 1983 film of the same starring Matthew Broderick, where Broderick stars as a hacker who discovers a game of global thermonuclear war.
Barlow has been working on the series with interactive-media startup Eko. #WarGames is said to be conceptually based on the film but more heavily takes inspiration from Mr. Robot. The series follows a few young hackers who become involved in government conspiracy and espionage. Viewers will assume the role of the lead character Kelly, directing the story and making choices for her along the way.
“With #WarGames I was thrilled to take the questions raised by the original movie and ask them again in a world where technology has fundamentally changed our lives,” Barlow said. “To do that interactively felt like a perfect marriage of form and content.”
There are no details regarding where #WarGames will be released, but Eko has released its projects on HelloEko.com in the past.
Barlow is also working on a new game called Telling Lies with Annapurna Pictures' game division, Annapurna Interactive. For IGN's thoughts on Her Story, read our review.
