Australia's most expensive new car lands in Melbourne

The most expensive new car in Australia has landed ahead of its official debut before the Australian Grand Prix.

Melbourne's Zagame group, home to brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini, is beleived to become the first brand to sell Italy's exclusive Pagani Huayra in Australia.

Zagame has put up Pagani signage in Melbourne, and opened "Pagani Melbourne" social media accounts.

An eagle-eyed fan of the Melbourne Car Spotters Facebook page photographed the rare supercar on a flatbed truck in Richmond last week.

Full details surrounding the model and the brand's Australian strategy will emerge in coming weeks.

But we can say the Huayra is likely to be the most expensive new car sold in Australia.

The standard Huayra coupe features a 537kW twin-turbocharged Mercedes-AMG V12 engine with a paddle-shift transmission and active aerodynamics that help keep the carbon fibre-bodied supercar under control.

Priced from £990,000 ($1.76m) in the UK, the supercar is likely to sit well north of $2 million once Australia's luxury car tax, GST and import duties are factored in.

If that's not enough, the more exclusive Huayra roadster brings 562kW of power for an eye-watering €2,280,000 ($3.62m), which could push its price beyond $5 million with luxury car tax added.

The Huayra is only built in left-hand-drive, which previously ruled it out for use on Australian roads. But new laws allowing small numbers of rare left-hand drive cars to be brought into Australia could make cars such as the Pagani more attractive to Australian customers.
