New Orleans Pelicans big man Anthony Davis has reportedly avoided a major ankle injury but is still doubtful for Friday's game against the Washington Wizards.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com reported the news Thursday, noting the Kentucky product suffered a left ankle sprain in Wednesday's win over the Sacramento Kings which has left him "day to day."

Davis left Wednesday's contest in the third quarter after he landed on Kosta Koufos' foot while attempting to grab a rebound. The Pelicans announced X-rays were negative, and Scott Kushner of the Advocate noted head coach Alvin Gentry said the big man would undergo an MRI on Thursday.

New Orleans can not afford to lose Davis for long since fellow big man DeMarcus Cousins is already out for the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in January.

With Davis carrying them on both ends, the Pelicans are riding a 10-game winning streak and have climbed all the way to the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. They are only a half-game behind the third-seeded Portland Trail Blazers.

Davis is averaging 28.1 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.5 steals per game in 2017-18, although injuries have plagued him throughout his entire career. Last season was the first time he played more than 68 games since he entered the league as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft.

New Orleans needs its five-time All-Star back and healthy to be a serious threat to the top teams in the West come playoff time.
