Amanda Nunes Vs. Raquel Pennington Headlines UFC 224; Cris Cyborg Remains Interested In Facing Nunes

Amanda Nunes puts her UFC women's bantamweight title on the line against Raquel Pennington ay UFC 224. If Nunes successfully defends her belt, women's featherweight champ Cris Cyborg remains interested in facing Nunes.

In the wake of UFC women's featherweight champion Cris Cyborg's first-round TKO win over Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222, UFC President Dana White thought about delaying the talked about matchup between women's bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington. With the announcement that Nunes and Pennington will headline UFC 224 on May 12, it looks like the fight between the two Brazilian champs will have to wait.

White spoke about the possible super fight at the UFC 222 post-fight press conference.

"Could be (in Rio)," White said. "I mean, (Cyborg) just fought, so once the adrenaline goes down, she's got to get checked out and make sure she's 100 percent. And I just think her and Nunes is the fight that needs to happen."

Whatever the reason, that fight is not going to happen, at least not yet.

Pennington is unbeaten in her past four fights. Her most recent win was a November 2016 unanimous decision win over former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate. Pennigton's last defeat came at the hands of Holly Holm. That bout took place in February 2015. Two fights after defeating Pennington, Holm captured the bantamweight title with a knockout win over Ronda Rousey.

Nunes is riding a six-fight unbeaten streak. She captured the bantamweight title with a first-round submission win over Tate. In her first defense of the belt, Nunes earned a 48-second TKO win over Rousey. Her most recent defense was a five-round split decision victory over Valentina Shevchenko in September. Nunes last loss was a third-round TKO defeat to Cat Zingano in September 2014.

Cyborg's manager, George Prajin, told MMAjunkie that his fighter is not discouraged by the Nunes vs. Pennington booking and remains interested in facing Nunes at 145 pounds.

"That's the fight fans want to see," Prajin said.

Cyborg did say at UFC 222 that she would be interested in facing Nunes in July.
