MEMPHIS — The gender of Dantrielle Morris' child? Only her hairdresser knew for sure.
At the urging of Janeese Murphy, Morris agreed to a creative "gender reveal" — which, for the uninformed, is a way of revealing the gender of one's unborn child to others or, in Morris' case, to the expecting mother.
Murphy explains it this way:
"She (Morris) is a friend from high school, and she recently announced she's pregnant. I knew she liked to wear different colors of hair, so I came up with this idea of dying her hair pink or blue to reveal the gender. She was really into the idea."
And so early this week, Murphy made the big reveal to her high school friend and captured the moment on a viral video that has attracted 2.8 million Facebook views so far. A national blog picked up the heartwarming video Tuesday.
Gender reveal ideas abound -- holding blue and pink jelly beans, a batch in each hand, and opening the proper hand to reveal the gender; using blue and pink balloons and releasing the winning color; or cutting a cake that reveals a pink or blue interior.

So how did Murphy, a stylist at Truth Studios The Salon, pull it off?
"(Morris) went to The Bump Studio here in Memphis to have a gender ultrasound," Murphy said. "They put the results in a sealed envelope and she gave it to me earlier in the day. I also kept her blindfolded through the entire service so she couldn't see the color of the products I was using."
Murphy said she used ammonia-free hair color to make sure it was safe for the expecting mom.
"It was a special moment," Murphy said. "I didn't do it for attention and had no idea so many people would see it."
So is Morris having a boy or a girl? You'll have to watch the reveal.
