Dramatic moment mongoose avoids being eaten by four lions

Despite getting trapped in one of the lions' mouths the mongoose managed to wriggle free and escape to a nearby mound of earth, in remarkable footage captured in Kenya.

This is the remarkable moment a mongoose managed to escape from four lion cubs who were trying to eat it.

The lions seemed certain to have their dinner when they surrounded the much smaller creature as it emerged from underneath vegetation.

But despite getting trapped in one of the lions' mouths the mongoose managed to wriggle free and escape to a nearby mound of earth.

The moment was captured in Kenya by tourist Mahendra Jain.

At the start of the clip two of the cubs are lying in wait for the smaller animal to appear from underground.

They are joined by a third friend as the mongoose emerges and one of them immediately pounces to keep it in its mouth.

But the mongoose does not give up and after escaping the lion's mouth it wrestles in the animal's paws while the other lions look on.

After falling to the ground it darts one way and then the other to wrong-foot the cubs  before scampering off to a nearby mound.

The mongoose was 'most distraught' and decided to put up the fight of its life, according to Mahendra Jain, who filmed the remarkable clip in Kenya

The mongoose leaps out at one of the lions from its hiding place, and once it returns the lions cannot find their prey even with the help of a fourth comrade.

Mahendra Jain, who filmed the video, said: 'The mongoose was most distraught and decided to put up the fight of its life. This little one was determined not to become anyone's dinner, never mind chew-toy.'

'It was very funny to watch as the cubs were most perplexed as to where their newfound toy had just disappeared off to. I can only imagine their disappointment of having a game ended before it ever really began.

'Mongeese are commonly known to be vicious fighters and extremely fast. They have no fear in standing up to any potential danger, no matter what the size.'
