Sumitomo Corp. is teaming with mobile game developer Gree Inc. and a U.S. company to release video games based on Japanese anime in North America.
The leading trading house will be offering a smartphone game themed on “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” (Dan-Machi), which could be available in early 2018.
The title is based on a light novel series of the same name that has more than 8 million copies in print.
Sumitomo produced the anime’s English-language edition in 2015 to distribute it worldwide via U.S. video streaming service provider Crunchyroll, which is a subsidiary of Ellation, in North America and elsewhere.
“Dan-Machi” has become popular especially among young people, with the title ranked high on the list of Crunchyroll’s top Japanese anime in terms of the number of views, the company said.
The smartphone game adaptation sees a boy battle his way through an adventure. The game is free to download, and players will be charged for in-game items.
It will be the first smartphone game offered by Sumitomo.
While the trading house has been muscling into media-related businesses, the export of Japanese anime content is a key operation expected to generate stable profits. The company will continue to release new anime-based games mainly in North America and also plans to offer character goods and other items.
