Spring Creek development offers upscale features without the upgrades

BUYING NEW | Spacious Laurel, Md., townhouses are just minutes from commuter routes.

Kanika Dalton had been house-hunting for quite a while, eagerly looking at almost every new construction community that popped up. Although she saw a few that caught her eye, including a new development in her home town of Beltsville, Md., she said they were all too small for what she was looking for.

Then, she found a townhouse development under construction in Anne Arundel County, Md., just minutes from major commuter routes. “The location is fantastic, because it’s in Laurel, and you can get to Baltimore easily, and it’s close to the B-W Parkway,” she said.

Blending with the natural landscaping, Spring Creek in Laurel offers an intimate enclave of townhouses with brick fronts and an abundance of windows. Lennar Homes opened the community in October; once completed, it will have 126 townhouses.

Dalton said she likes that the townhouses are spacious and that many upscale features are included in the price. She’s been in her new home for a month, and she said she likes the fact that the development is all townhouses, instead of being sprinkled with apartments, like some other new communities she’s toured.

Although it’s a new development, the homeowners won’t have to wait to enjoy amenities such as a recreation center, swimming pool and a tot lot. The builder said that residents of Spring Creek can share the amenities at a neighboring community it developed just a short walk away.

Large kitchen island: There are two floor plans with varying elevations on each. The builder highlights both model homes. The primary difference between the two is about 300 square feet, primarily on the main living level. The larger model, the Ellicott, is what Dalton purchased. It comes with a two-car garage; the other model, the Cambridge, has a one-car garage.

Both floor plans have a recreation room on the lower level, but if buyers prefer more sleeping quarters, that living space can be converted to an additional bedroom suite with a full bath. The Ellicott has a wide split staircase that completely separates the recreation room from the garage.

The model home showcases a trendy plush light-brown carpeting on the staircases and top levels that complements the dark wide-plank hardwood flooring on the main level. But it’s hard not to notice that the center of attraction, because it’s placed in the middle of the home, is an oversize 16-foot entertainment island in the kitchen.

It’s one of the features that Dalton said she enjoys the most in her new home. The island, which doubles as a breakfast bar, is large enough to seat six or more people, and there’s plenty of workspace, with a sink and cabinetry.

“Everyone that comes over says it’s so big. And the hardwood flooring is also fabulous,” she said. Dalton added that another favorite feature is the large walk-in pantry. She joked that it’s about the size of the bathroom in her former home.

Long pendant light fixtures add a dramatic touch to the island, and recessed lights can be found throughout the rest of the main level. Black-and-gray granite countertops and white cabinetry offer a nice contrast to the stainless-steel appliances.

Wine-rack option: A welcoming dining room and sunny family room flank the kitchen. The family room has a walk-in pantry and glass doors leading onto an outdoor deck. This model is an end unit, so an extra set of windows on the side of the dining room makes it extra sunny.

This level also has a walk-in pantry, powder room and the option to add a built-in wine rack off the kitchen area.

The second floor has three bedrooms, including the owner’s suite, which has a walk-in closet that’s large enough to double as a dressing room with a window. The model features a tray ceiling with decorative moldings and a sumptuous bathroom with granite counters and a shower with a built-in seat.

The builder highlights an “everything included” initiative to let buyers know many features considered upgrades come standard with the home. Some of those features include hardwood floors on the entire main level, a finished recreation room, designer cabinets, a stainless-steel appliance package and granite countertops.

Dalton said it was great to see that features such as recessed lights and the deep sink in the kitchen were standard features.

Loft retreat: Another set of stairs leads up to an optional fourth-floor loft. This bright and airy multipurpose space is ideal to set up as a quiet retreat or a kids’ playroom, or as additional space for entertaining. There’s the option to add a wet bar to the room.

Two sets of doors open on to a large, private rooftop deck that helps blur the lines dividing indoor and outdoor spaces. With the main-level deck, Dalton noted, owners have two options for outdoor spaces. Buyers can also choose to use this fourth level as another bedroom with a full bath. The loft comes with a powder room.

The other floor plan, the Cambridge, also comes with the option of adding fourth-floor loft or bedroom.

Schools: Maryland City Elementary, MacArthur Middle, Meade High.

Transit: The community is close to Interstate 95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
