As one of New York’s highly-anticipated brands of fashion month, it came as a surprise when Opening Ceremony opted out of showing in all major cities this year.
Labelled the “cool kid” of the industry, it has never shied away from unconventional avenues, including ballet performances and interpretive dance to exhibit its collections in past seasons.
And this year is no different as the streetwear inspired brand chose California’s Disneyland as its stage. Opening Ceremony closed out international fashion month and marked the first time in more than four decades that the theme park hosted a fashion show.
The collection joins a long line of Disney fashion collaborations of recent years including Minnie and Mickey-inspired Coach, Donald Duck’s Gucci collection, Disney princesses at Dolce & Gabbana and Kenzo x The Jungle Book.
But just as it seemed like there was an oversaturation of odes to Disney, Opening Ceremony has trumped them all.
Held after-hours in the theme park’s Toon Town, the collaboration with Disney was an ode to “true original” Mickey Mouse, to celebrate his 90th birthday. After a traditional runway section which focused on which was a nod to a colourful 1970s california, the segment concluded in true Disney fashion with a full marching band ushering Mickey and Minnie down the runway as the pair sported Opening Ceremony outfits.
But it was far from over, as models paid homage to the Disney brand in heavily inspired Mickey and Minnie Mouse branded motifs; from cocktail dresses to urban athleisure.
Their love of Disney manifested itself in clothes with the brand’s downtown twist: vintage oversized jumpers, faux fur coats sporty tracksuits, satin motorcycles pants, baseball jackets, were balanced with edgy cut out dresses and maxi skirts. The street style display was basically the staples of any 90s kids wardrobes.
For Opening Ceremony’s designers, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, the collection is a nod to Mickey’s “utopian spirit” and “1970s optimism” with the belief that all dreams can come true.
"To do a show at Disneyland has been something that we joked about, talked about, dreamed about; we said if we could ever do a show at Disneyland, that would be the ultimate ultimate," said Leon on the night.
"We want to make sure that what we did today holds its own and is a stamp in Mickey's history."
On the beauty front, models wore buns reminiscent of mouse ears and Mickey Mouse manicures.
And Mickey and Minnie weren’t the only celebrities in attendance, with the guest list including Laverne Cox, Tallulah Willis Chance the Rapper, Maya Rudolph and Diplo.
